Maxis equips local entrepreneurs from Kg. Chengal community with digital knowledge

There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement from aspiring entrepreneurs from Kg. Chengal in Ketereh, Kelantan, when they were recently given a boost to improve their business with digital knowledge. A total of 40 participants took part in a special digital training workshop organised by Maxis on 17 May as part of its Raya festive charity.

Learning how to use social media, content creation, photography and basic accounting, the one-day programme was aimed at equipping local entrepreneurs here with the right digital tools and marketing skills to enable them to expand their business. They were also taught how to set up a business Facebook page, snap Insta-worthy photos, write interesting captions and use digital mapping tools. Assisting the participants were 30 Maxis volunteers from the Kelantan region with various digital, communications and IT backgrounds.

The event was held at Pusat Internet Kg. Chengal, which is where Maxis’ flagship community programe, eKelas, has been regularly held since 2017. Besides the digital marketing workshop, volunteers also organised a ‘Maxis Motivates’ session for eKelas students here. These sessions are where Maxis employees share their life stories and experiences, and organise engaging activities, with the hope of inspiring students and expanding their knowledge in other areas. The eKelas students in Kg. Chengal took part in two activities, where they assembled a solar-powered robotics set and a train set. Through these activities, the children learn the importance of teamwork, perseverance and communication in completing a project.

“For each festive season, we aim to carry out activities that would benefit the community as a whole. And digital workshop is one such activity. There are many cottage industry entrepreneurs in the country who are passionate about their business and want it to prosper but may not have the digital experience to further grow their business. So we wanted to help the community here unlock their potential through technology. We hope that our small contribution will go a long way, and we thank them for giving us the opportunity to help them,” said Mariam Bevi Batcha, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Maxis.

Workshop participant Zainorita Zawawi, who found the workshop really helpful, said, “I learnt a lot of new things today. The one I really liked was how to make my Facebook page more interesting. I have a Facebook page, but the sales that I make from there have been quite limited. Now, equipped with more knowledge and skills, I’m confident I can get more sales online.”

Maxis volunteer Safwan Bin Surkardi, from Maxis Enterprise, shared his excitement about the programme. “I feel privileged to be part of this programme, where as a company, we are able to reach out and strengthen our ties with the community. Beyond that, particularly for the micro SMEs, it is rewarding to empower them with digital tools and teaching them a new way to develop their business further.”

At the event, Maxis also presented food boxes to 20 underprivileged families. The event ended with Buka Puasa with the community.
