What is LTE? What’s the difference between 2G, 3G and HSPA+? Is 4G the same as LTE?

LTE (an abbreviation for Long Term Evolution) is the latest technology in the mobile network evolution that provides users with much faster speeds comparing to 3G.

HSPA+ is an enhancement that offers faster data speeds on the 3G network.

In Malaysia, 4G and LTE are used in the same manner. Different devices display it differently.

Why is it that my data finishes really fast nowadays? I use it as I normally do and it was fine before. Am I consuming more data on LTE?

Depends on what you use your LTE for. For most of the situations - whether it’s messaging and calling via WhatsApp, video streaming on Facebook, GPS navigation on Waze, or loading pages on Google Chrome –4G uses the similar amount of data as 3G. But as 4G is faster, information loads quicker on your device. General tendency would be to view more content within the same period of time.

There are some exceptions where 4G would consume more data than 3G. For example, on YouTube, 4G users get HD videos by default. With the better resolution and experience, comes a little more consumption of your mobile internet.

Slow browsing using LTE - I’m a usual 4G user but I’ve been getting really slow network for the past week.

There may be many reasons to this.
It might be that your internet pass has been fully depleted. You can check it by logging into the MyMaxis App.

If you still have remaining quota, check whether other Maxis users within the same area are facing the same slow network issue.
If not, check your data settings, whether it is set to 4G enabled, or accidentally switched to 2G/3G only.

If yes, it might be due to network congestion, where too many users are on the same network within the same area. It might also be a shortage. Please reach out to our 4G ambassadors to highlight the network shortage and our network experts will get on it straight away.

Why do I get 4G signal at one corner of my house but 3G at the rest of the areas?

Each radio technology (3G vs 4G) has different coverage radius, i.e. 4G radius is three quarter size of a 3G radius. As much as we want to cover the whole place, inch by inch, with 4G, it’s challenging for us to do so. Sometimes it is inevitable to have a small area “corner of the house” which is covered by 3G and not 4G.

Why aren’t I always on 4G? My network fluctuates from 4G to H very often.

There are more 3G towers than 4G towers. We have over 94.5% of population coverage for 3G and our 4G population coverage nationwide at 89% today. But rest assured, Maxis is the fastest growing 4G LTE network in Malaysia. As we roll out more 4G towers, you’ll see more of yourself being on 4G.

I realize that my battery has been depleting faster after I’ve started using 4G. Is it true that 4G eats up more battery? What can I do about it?

Not true. In fact, since 4G LTE has been introduced, many manufacturers has improved their device’s power management including larger battery capacity & a more energy efficient baseband radio processor that will handle 4G LTE network without draining your phone’s battery. If battery is draining fast, you can decrease the screen brightness, manually shut the apps which are running at the background, or use applications like Juice Defender.

Is there a price difference between Maxis 4G and Maxis 3G? How can I enjoy 4G LTE speed?

No there is no price difference; we offer you the best network when you pay for your internet data pass. You’ll be on 4G if you fulfill all of the below:

  • You are using a LTE enabled device
  • You have a valid Mobile Internet Pass (whether 100MB or 2GB, as long as you have high speed quota)
  • You have an LTE-enabled SIM (Any sim card above 64K supports 4G. Just need to check whether your SIM is 32k, 64k or 128k from the front of your SIM card)
  • You have turned on LTE on your mobile device setting
  • You are within LTE coverage area

So wait no more and switch to Maxis 4G LTE!

What experiences is 4G better for? What are the things I can do with 4G that I can’t be done with 3G?

4G LTE offers better experience for all types of data applications.

Internet necessity: Less than 4 seconds to load web pages; faster download of images in social chat apps

Entertainment: Seamless video streaming on YouTube or iFlix; non-stop music streaming on Spotify Premium; smoother gaming experience.

Productivity: Fast upload of documents onto cloud storage, file downloads,

Communication: Video calls with less lag

There are apps which can only function well with 4G, such as Meerkat, Periscope, Stringwire and more.

What experiences is 4G better for? What are the things I can do with 4G that I can’t be done with 3G?
3G (1.5 - 7 Mbps*) 4G LTE (7-15 Mbps*)
Download an app (20 MB) Under 3 minutes Under 25 seconds
Post a picture to Facebook Under 25 seconds Under 1 second
Stream music Under 10 seconds to buffer. Occasional breaks in playback to buffer. Under 1 second to buffer. No breaks in playback due to buffering.
Watch a YouTube video Under 20 seconds to buffer a Standard Definition (SD) video. Occasional re-buffering. Under 1 second to buffer a High Definition (HD) video. No playback re-buffering or dropped frames.
What is fibre broadband?

Fibre broadband is a hard wire platform/service that allows access to the internet from your home or any premise of your choosing. Fibre optics is the latest advancement in broadband technology which promises super-fast speeds for all your daily internet needs. It is also commonly known as FTTH (fibre to the home).

What is the difference between fibre broadband, DSL broadband, and 4G?

  • Fibre broadband gives you the fastest internet speed compared to DSL broadband and traditional dial-ups. The technology in fibre broadband, which uses fibre optics, allows for faster data transfer compared to standard copper wires, which are used in DSL broadband connections
  • DSL broadband is high-speed internet access that is faster than traditional dial-up access, but not as fast as fibre broadband
  • 4G is a mobile delivery platform which can provide fast data throughput BUT relies on mobile base stations to provide service

What experience is better on fibre compared to DSL broadband? What are the things I can do on fibre that I can’t do on cable broadband?

Everything is faster on fibre broadband compared to regular broadband. You can stream video on HD with zero buffering, stream videos on multiple devices simultaneously, enjoy gaming with no lag, and more! With DSL broadband you may experience minor buffering or lag.

Do I consume more data on fibre broadband? Why?

Depending on your internet consumption habits, you may consume more data when you are on fibre broadband because everything loads faster and better. For example:

With fibre broadband you may be able to stream 5 x HD videos in 10 minutes compared to DSL broadband, where you may only be able to watch only 2 HD videos in the same amount of time It is a time vs. speed weightage (so you consume more data on fibre compared to DSL broadband in the same amount of time). Maxis gives unlimited data with all our fibre broadband packages; you can find out more here

Why is it that in certain parts of my house, the fibre connection is strong, but in other parts of my house, the connection is weak?

This has to do with the WiFi signal strength that your router emits, as well as other elements within your home that may affect the signal strength of your WiFi signal, e.g. concrete walls, electronic equipment

How do I improve the WiFi connection to the rest of my house?

Customers are advised to keep their WiFi router at a central location away from any electronic disturbances. You may also opt for “repeaters” or “homeplugs” to help extend the WiFi coverage. You can also reach out to Maxperts – our dedicated team of internet experts that will help you put together the ultimate home fibre broadband experience. Find out more here
