Maxis enhances customer security with new AI-powered network protection for voice and SMS
Maxis Berhad (Maxis) has further enhanced its defence against digital fraud by deploying an integrated artificial intelligence (AI)-powered network firewall for both voice and SMS traffic. Operational since January 2026, this builds on the company’s multi-tiered security protocols, adding a new layer of protection to provide a safer connectivity experience for customers.
This end-to-end service screens international SMS and voice traffic entering Malaysia to ensure its integrity. Powered by AI, the system provides 24/7 monitoring and continuous traffic analysis to detect and neutralise threats in real-time, intercepting threats before they reach users. These enhanced security measures are provided at no additional cost.
The firewall is designed to block unwanted SMS messages, including spam, international scam messages disguised as local traffic, and traffic from unofficial channels. This protects users from sophisticated attacks and fake sender IDs. It also works for voice calls, making it harder for scammers to engage in spoofing by masking their actual numbers and identities.
"As fraud tactics become increasingly complex, ensuring security must be a continuous effort. This AI-powered firewall enables us to better address evolving threats and potential risks. This reinforces our commitment to deliver a fast, reliable, and secure network where our customers can stay connected with greater confidence." - Yap Chee Sun, Chief Network Officer at Maxis
This deployment builds on Maxis’ existing network safeguards. In 2025 alone, the company intercepted and blocked over half a billion fraudulent call and SMS attempts, including messages containing malicious URLs and scam keywords.
Beyond strengthening its network security, Maxis is actively collaborating with the industry to combat digital fraud. Since end-January 2026, the company has implemented inter-operator spoofing checks with four other mobile network operators (MNOs), where caller numbers are validated directly with the respective operator to detect masked numbers.
Maxis continues to work closely with national enforcement agencies to combat scams, in line with the national cybersecurity priorities. The company also educates users about emerging fraud tactics through its customer communications and digital channels.
