Maxis expands East Malaysia fibre footprint with CT Sabah partnership

  • Maxis and CT Sabah in partnership for access to HSBB Network Services
  • Maxis to have full access to CT Sabah’s fibre optic network, which will enable the roll out of affordable broadband plans to more Sabah homes and businesses
  • Partnership another significant step forward for Maxis in fulfilling its converged ambitions

Maxis and Celcom Timur (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd. (CT Sabah) will collaborate to provide greater access to fibre connectivity to the people and businesses in Sabah through the provision of High Speed Broadband (HSBB) Network Services.

Both parties symbolised their partnership today through the exchange of the duly executed Access Agreement. Witnessing the exchange was YB Datuk Dr. Haji Jaujan Bin Haji Sambakong, Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah and Minister of Local Government and Housing, Sabah, who attended the event on behalf of the Chief Minister of Sabah, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Mohd. Shafie bin Haji Apdal. Representing Maxis for the exchange was its Chief Executive Officer, Gokhan Ogut, while CT Sabah was represented by Chief Executive Officer, En. Nazaruddin Bin Abdul Rahim.

Accompanying the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Local Government and Housing, Sabah was YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Chairman of Maxis and En. Ahmad Rizal Hj Dahli, Chairman of CT Sabah.

What this partnership is all about

With the partnership, Maxis will have full access to CT Sabah’s fibre optic network, which enables a direct link-up to offer high-speed broadband services to end-users at attractive rates. This will enable Maxis to offer its already available fibre plans to even more homes and businesses in the state. Starting from 1 November, more Sabahans in areas with CT Sabah’s fibre optic infrastructure will be able to enjoy Maxis’ fibre plans at affordable prices and with an unmatched personalised experience.

Leveraging CT Sabah’s infrastructure and services, Maxis will also have access to the latest hardware and software technology on a 24/7 network monitoring system. Additionally, Maxis will have access to CT Sabah’s dedicated and competent technical support staff to assist customers in managing network transmission, with a current average Mean Time to Restore (MTTR) of within two hours.

YB Datuk Dr. Haji Jaujan Bin Haji Sambakong, Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah and Minister of Local Government and Housing, Sabah, on behalf of YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Mohd. Shafie bin Haji Apdal, Chief Minister of Sabah:

“Collaboration between service providers is important for the successful implementation of the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan. By widening access to broadband connectivity, more consumers and businesses in Sabah would be able to leverage the Internet to create better opportunities which can in turn help accelerate the growth of our digital economy. I am pleased to see the collaboration between service providers to build an environment of better and affordable connectivity, particularly in fibre broadband. It is timely and very much needed as we forge ahead to realise new opportunities for Sabah.”

Gokhan Ogut, Chief Executive Officer of Maxis:

“At Maxis, we have a clear ambition to be Malaysia’s leading converged solutions company, and we have an important role to play in driving higher broadband adoption and have made significant investments in this area. Our partnership with CT Sabah is another significant step forward for us in fulfilling our converged ambitions, and I would like to thank CT Sabah for helping us make this a reality, not just for Maxis, but for the people and businesses of Sabah as we look forward to rolling out our attractive fibre plans here to more homes and businesses.”

Nazaruddin Bin Abdul Rahim, Chief Executive Officer of CT Sabah:

“As the leading infrastructure provider with the widest fibre optic network in Sabah and Labuan, we are committed to working closely with telcos to enable them to expand their coverage throughout the state. Our goal is to provide the platform upon which service providers can offer higher Internet speeds at attractive prices to consumers. In view of this, we are confident that our continued partnership with Maxis will be highly beneficial to fibre users in Sabah, where even more communities can look forward to the benefits of digital connectivity, and enjoy exciting value-added plans from Maxis.”

Maxis’ fibre broadband story

August 2018 was a significant time for Maxis as the company had a head start in attaining first mover advantage through its Fibrenation campaign. Offering its most affordable and worry-free broadband plans up to 65% cheaper than what was previously offered, it essentially opened up a new era of accessible and affordable fibre broadband for even more Malaysian homes and businesses. An overwhelming response continues to see strong momentum in take up today. Following that, Maxis elevated this experience in April this year with three new superfast Internet speeds – 300Mbps, 500Mbps and 800Mbps – available for both consumer and businesses.

In December 2018, Maxis signed a Letter of Understanding with SACOFA for High Speed Broadband (HSBB) Network Services in Sarawak. Since then, Maxis and SACOFA have signed access agreements with Maxis having rolled out its already available fibre plans to more Sarawakians. The agreement with CT Sabah is the third major HSBB Access Agreement that Maxis has signed after TM and SACOFA.
