Maxis and UKM collaborate to accelerate digital learning in Malaysia

Students of Maxis eKelas can look forward to even more exciting content as it enriches the digital learning portal with a brand new series of original videos for Science, Maths and English. Maxis is embarking on this project to produce the video content with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with them on 17 June 2019.

Representing UKM were Vice Chancellor, YBhg Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Industry & Community Partnership, YBhg Profesor Dato' Dr. Imran Ho Abdullah, while the Maxis team was led by its Chairman, YM Raja Tan Sri Dato' Seri Arshad Bin Raja Tun Uda; CEO, Gokhan Ogut; Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Paul McManus; and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Mariam Bevi Batcha.

Through the agreement, Maxis and UKM will co-create digital learning video content for eKelas subjects of Science, Maths and English, in line with the Malaysian education syllabus. There will be three workshops with 20-30 participants per session, with a target to produce up to 10 videos per workshop. Participating faculties from UKM are the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, Faculty of Science & Technology, and Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI).

“UKM is one of the top universities in Malaysia and the region, with a strategic direction to be the regional leader in academic and research excellence. Our partnership with Maxis to co-create content is an important initiative towards this direction, and aligns well with the enhancement of our academic and research capabilities. We are pleased to be working with Maxis and look forward to achieving the desired outcomes of this project,” said Ybhg Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, UKM Vice Chancellor.

“We are proud to bring our expertise in technology and digitalisation to unlock the potential and possibilities of the Internet for the development of skills and learning content. We believe these skills are not just for the students but also important for educators and potential educators in this thriving technological era. While we continue to bring the best and fresh digital content to our ever growing number of eKelas students across Malaysia, we are delighted to be working with UKM to help university students interested in creating content, to provide more quality content for our eKelas students. Through our capabilities, we also look forward to working with other educational institutions for similar initiatives,” said YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad.

During a two-month pilot phase, Maxis teamed up with the Faculty of Education of UKM last year for a content co-creation workshop, which resulted in a bank of videos for Maths and English subjects created by faculty students. Collaborating with UKM’s Centre for Teaching and Learning Technologies together with 20 students from the faculty, the pilot included a focus group session with eKelas students held at Pusat Internet Semenyih, followed by two workshops at UKM featuring expert speakers and a mock up recording studio at UKM’s ‘Hab Inovasi Pembelajaran Fakulti Pendidikan’ to record participating student creators. Through the workshops, they produced two playlist of videos teaching students to solve Algebra equation (Algebra bersama Cikgu-Cikgu UKM) and learning English while on a school holiday setting (Learn English While on Holiday with UKM Teachers).

eKelas is Maxis’ flagship community programme that aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural communities. It is an after-school digital learning initiative for students from Primary 6 to Form 5, which brings learning enrichment in a fun and vibrant way and provides access to quality education content, in line with the Malaysian School Syllabus. Focusing on Science, Mathematics and English, students are exposed to experiential learning with competitions and group projects, as well as motivational sessions by Maxis’ own young and brightest talents.
