While both aim to improve your WiFi coverage, they work very differently.
A WiFi extender (or repeater) simply boosts your existing WiFi signal, often creating a separate network name. This can lead to slower speeds and a less reliable connection as your devices struggle to switch between the main router and the extended signal. It's like shouting louder to reach further, but the sound quality might suffer.
A WiFi mesh, like the one bundled with our Maxis 5G Plus Home WiFi 159 plan, consists of your main router and an additional Mesh unit. These two devices work together as one smart, unified network. Your devices automatically connect to the strongest signal as you move around your home, ensuring seamless, consistent speeds and coverage everywhere. It's like having your main speaker and an additional speaker perfectly in sync, covering a larger area with clear sound.

For best results, place your Maxis 5G router centrally, high up, and ideally nearer to a window or an indoor balcony, ensuring it faces outward. If you still find weak spots or dead zones in a room, the Maxis 5G Plus Home WiFi 159 plan includes a Mesh unit. This Mesh works with your router to spread strong, reliable WiFi across your whole home, great for larger areas or many connected devices.

Early termination fee is calculated based on:
For 5G home router: [(Recommended Retail Price (RRP) – (Upfront Cost) x (Remaining month(s) ÷ Minimum Commitment Period)]
For Maxis Zerolution: [(Recommended Retail Price (RRP) ÷ 24 or 36months) x remaining month(s) of Commitment Period].

Best placement of 5G router:
- Place your router in a location close to an outward facing window or indoor balcony where there is also a power source.
- Concrete walls, metal doors can reduce cellular signal from the tower. Placement in basements should be avoided.
- Signal strength: Once your device(s) is connected to the router, you can check the signal strength by checking the signal indicators on the Router or after logging into the 5G router web page on the connected device. If you do not have full network signal bars, try setting up the router in another location of your home.
For your Mesh Unit:
- Position the Mesh unit roughly halfway between your 5G router and the area where you need better WiFi.
- Ensure the Mesh unit has a strong connection to your main router (check its indicator light).
- Keep both your router and Mesh unit at least 2-3 metres away from other electronics like cordless phones, microwaves, or Bluetooth devices.
