Frequently Asked Questions

Forgotten PIN and PUK

  • PIN (Personal Identification Number):
A 4 digit code that locks your SIM card to prevent unauthorized use. You’ll need it to unlock your phone when restarting it.

    PUK (PIN Unlock Key):
A unique code to unlock your SIM if you enter the wrong PIN too many times. Never guess the PUK – incorrect attempts can permanently block your SIM.

  • You may change the default PIN upon keying in the dedicated PUK on your device. Alternatively, if you know your current PIN and simply want to change it:

    1. Go to your phone's Settings
    2. Look for "Security" or "SIM card lock" settings
    3. Select "Change SIM PIN"
    4. Enter your current PIN
    5. Enter and confirm your new PIN
    6. Your PIN will be updated immediately
  • You can try maximum 3 times before your SIM PIN gets locked.

  • You can get your PUK code unlocked via below ways:

    • Maxis app
    • Maxis Care
    • Call us at 123 from another Maxis line or 1800-82-1123 from other lines.
  • To get your PUK code through the Maxis app:

    1. Log in to your Maxis app
    2. Navigate to "ME"
    3. Select "Account" > Account Info
    4. Select Account to view the PUK for the service.
  • Once you have your PUK code:

    1. Turn on your phone with the locked SIM inserted
    2. When prompted for the PUK code, enter the 8-digit PUK number
    3. You'll then be asked to create a new PIN (4-8 digits)
    4. Enter your new PIN twice to confirm
    5. Your SIM will be unlocked and your new PIN will be active
  • You have a maximum of 10 attempts to enter the correct PUK code. If you enter an incorrect PUK code 10 times, your SIM card will be permanently blocked and you'll need to get a SIM replacement.

  • After successfully entering your PUK code:

    1. You'll be prompted to create a new PIN immediately
    2. Your SIM card will be unlocked
    3. Your service will be fully restored
    4. The PUK attempt counter will be reset
    5. Your new PIN will be active for future use
  • In order to unblock your SIM which is locked because of entering wrong PUK code many times, please walk into any Maxis Centre personally to unblock the SIM/perform SIM replacement.

Tips: This is a change, please bring along your MyKad, we will conduct biometric verification prior to replacing your SIM. For a foreigner, please walk in personally with your passport or identity document which you used to register for your Mobile.

  • If your SIM card needs to be replaced due to permanent blocking, a fee of RM10 applies.

    • SIM PIN: Secures your SIM card and prevents unauthorized use of your mobile service. Required when you restart your phone or insert your SIM into a different device.
    • Phone passcode/pattern: Secures access to your phone's content and functions. This doesn't protect your SIM if it's removed and used in another device.
  • To prevent future PIN/PUK problems:

    1. Choose a memorable PIN that isn't easily guessable (avoid 1234, birthdays, etc.)
    2. Store your PUK code in a secure location separate from your phone
    3. Save your PUK in your Maxis online account or a password manager
    4. Consider writing down your PIN/PUK in a secure location (not with your phone)
    5. If you rarely use the PIN feature, consider disabling it (though this reduces security)
