Frequently Asked Questions
General Information on LHDN e-Invoice
-
An e-Invoice is the digital equivalent of a paper invoice, created in a structured electronic format. It replaces traditional paper or electronic documents such as invoices, credit notes, debit notes, and refund notes while containing the same essential transaction data. For comprehensive information, visit the LHDN e-Invoice microsite at e-Invoice | Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia.
-
The key difference is validation. An e-Invoice must be validated by LHDN (Malaysian Inland Revenue Board), and this validation is verified through a QR code displayed on the PDF e-Invoice shared with customers. This validation ensures the document meets tax authority requirements and can be used for official tax purposes.
The content of the documents also varies:
Your Maxis/ Hotlink bill shows a complete financial picture, including all service charges, taxes, adjustments/credits, third-party charges and previous balances (if any).
e-Invoices only reflect current-period Hotlink charges (or prepaid top-up value) and any applicable taxes.
-
No, you do not need to provide your personal TIN to Maxis for e-Invoicing purposes. Maxis uses a generic TIN on e-Invoices, as approved by LHDN.
For Malaysian residents, the generic TIN displayed will typically be EI00000000010.
For foreigners, the generic TIN displayed will typically be EI00000000020. Maxis does not collect customers' personal TIN for e-Invoice issuance.
-
No. Your Maxis billing process remains unchanged—you'll continue receiving your bills as usual, and payments to Maxis should still be made based on your bill. The e-Invoice serves as a supporting document specifically required by LHDN for tax deduction purposes.

The difference exists because these documents serve different purposes:
Maxis Bill includes:
- All service charges from Maxis
- Applicable taxes
- Adjustments and credits
- Third-party charges where Maxis is the payment method
- Previous balances (overpayments or underpayments)
- One-time rounding (up or down)
e-Invoice includes only:- Charges from Maxis as a supplier for the current month
- Applicable taxes on Maxis services
- No third-party charges
- No previous balances or arrears
- No rounding applied
Your payment obligation remains as stated in your Maxis bill. The e-Invoice is designed to comply with tax regulations and may follow different reporting rules.
e-Invoice for Individual Customers
-
As an individual not operating a business, you'll need an e-Invoice as supporting documentation for:
- Personal tax relief claims in your income tax return (Form B/BE) to LHDN
- Expense reimbursement claims from your employer (subject to company policy)
-
If you're not claiming tax relief or seeking reimbursement, you may not need an e-Invoice. Your existing documentation (receipt, invoice, or bill) should be sufficient for personal record-keeping.
-
Yes, as a customer, you have the right to request an e-Invoice. When making such a request, you must provide:
Mandatory information:
- Full name
- Identification number
-
You may qualify for personal tax relief under the Lifestyle category for:
- Purchase of personal computer, smartphone, or tablet (not for business use)
- Payment of monthly internet subscription bills (under your own name)
Final approval of claims is subject to LHDN review. For detailed guidance, please visit www.hasil.gov.my. -
Different customer types can access e-Invoices through different channels:
- Maxis Postpaid customers: Access via the Maxis app by navigating to Bills > Bill details > e-Invoice, or through the Maxis Care Portal
- Hotlink Postpaid customers: Access via the Hotlink app by navigating to My bills > e-Invoice, or through the Hotlink Self-Service Portal
- Note for customers with multiple services: If you have both Hotlink Postpaid and Maxis Postpaid services, you can access your Hotlink Postpaid e-Invoices through the Maxis app as well.
- Hotlink Prepaid customers: Since prepaid top-up transactions are typically not eligible for tax relief, Hotlink prepaid customers need to specifically opt-in for e-Invoices if needed (primarily for reimbursement purposes). After opting in via the Hotlink app (one-time process), access e-Invoices by navigating to myHotlink > e-Invoice. If you have multiple Hotlink Prepaid numbers (MSISDNs) registered under the same NRIC, you only need to opt in once, as the e-Invoice opt-in follows your NRIC rather than individual phone numbers.
Important: e-Invoices will only be available for top-ups made from the month of opt-in onwards. - Non-Maxis customers who made outright purchases: Access via e-Invoice portal with validation through Facial Recognition. This option is available for customers who provided their personal details at the point of purchase.
-
Yes, customers can reject an e-Invoice via the LHDN portal for various reasons. However, please note that rejecting an e-Invoice through LHDN portal does not resolve any concerns related to your Maxis bill, account or services.
If you have questions about your charges, service issues, or account details, you must contact our Customer Service directly through our official channels for proper resolution. The e-Invoice rejection process through LHDN is separate from our customer service resolution process.
-
If you provided incorrect personal details during your purchase, you will not be able to receive an e-Invoice for that transaction. After updating your information with the correct details, e-Invoices will only be generated for future purchases. The e-Invoice system requires accurate customer information at the time of transaction to comply with LHDN requirements, and retroactive corrections are not possible.

Important notes on e-Invoice availability:
- e-Invoices for monthly bills and purchases are only available for the last 180 days.
- For tax filing purposes, you can use the Annual e-Invoice which consolidates your transactions for the entire year.
- Until LHDN officially mandates e-Invoices as the only acceptable documentation for tax claims, you may continue using your regular Maxis or Hotlink bills for all transactions as supporting documentation.
You can access your bills through:- Your eBill via email (if subscribed)
- Last six months bills through the Maxis app and Hotlink app for Hotlink Postpaid.
- Annual Summary of Invoices via the Maxis or Hotlink app (refer above question for guide.)
-
Our e-Invoice system provides documentation from January 2025 onwards for postpaid customers. For Hotlink prepaid customers, e-Invoices are only available from the month of opt-in onwards. For transactions before these dates, your regular Maxis bill or receipt remains valid for tax documentation purposes.
