#Hotlink Team Takes #IceBucketChallenge, Urges Other Malaysian Internet Firms To Spread Cause

 

Seen videos of international CEOs and celebrities spreading over the internet performing the ALS #IceBucketChallenge? The entire Hotlink team at Maxis became the first Malaysian corporate team to participate, in response to a challenge posed by local news website Cilisos.my. Hoping the cause also spreads locally, Sulin Lau, Maxis' Head of Marketing Services, in turn challenged three other Malaysian teams in the local internet scene – Cheryl Goh and the myTeksi team, Khailee Ng of Catcha.com, and @melakaboy who manages prominent social media personalities. The #IceBucketChallenge began as a way to raise money and create awareness for the ALS Association's efforts around amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and has so far increased public donations to the cause. As part of the challenge, the participants are splashed with ice cold water and required to 'pay it forward' and nominate three more people take on the same challenge within 24 hours. Since the challenge began about a month ago, it has spread over global social media and news networks, and has greatly benefited from attention garnered by the celebrities, sports stars, and even Silicon Valley internet company CEOs.

"#Hotlink is all about having the internet 'always on'. We truly believe that there is nothing more powerful to demonstrate the power of the always on web than a great idea or cause worth spreading. We started seeing individuals in Malaysia getting involved a few days ago. And so at Maxis, we are very glad we got a chance to do our little bit as a company to spread along the cause here in Malaysia," said Sulin Lau, explaining why the team took on the challenge at KLCC Park today.
