Maxis Empowers Communities With Digital Learning Through Its Community Outreach Programme, eKelas
Just months after launching its new community outreach programme eKelas, Maxis continued to bring digital learning closer to the community with the launch of the eKelas portal last Sunday. The launch event, which took place during eKelas Carnival in Putrajaya, attracted more than 700 attendees including eKelas students and parents.
The eKelas programme by Maxis is an after-school digital learning initiative that aims to improve the academic performance of students in the rural communities. Its focus is on three subjects - Science, Mathematics and English - for Form 1, 2 and 3 students. eKelas offers a combination of live tutorials, group learning and interactive digital content which is in line with the Malaysian School Syllabus. The programme is delivered through Pusat Internet 1Malaysia (PI1Ms), Community Broadband Centres that serve as digital hubs for communities in the underserved areas.
More than 2,400 students are already participating in the live tutorials delivered through 20 PI1Ms under Maxis care nationwide. Now with the newly launched eKelas portal, students have access to a cloud-based resource of learning content, enabling them to study at their own pace. Students can take charge of their learning and at the same time discover how to learn collaboratively.
Among the key features of the eKelas portal include:
- Personalised learning journey -Students get to customise the look and feel of their learning journey and have options for accessing content that’s of interest to them.
- Community interaction - The portal provides opportunities for students to interact with other learners and teachers. Discussion forums and sharing buttons are among the communication tools that are available for the students.
- Recognising achievement - It’s important that students have a sense of achievement to keep them motivated. The unique leader board feature in the portal will keep track of the points scored by the students.
Speaking at the event, YBhg Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus, Chief Officer, Communications And Digital Ecosystem Sector, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said, “Technology and the Internet are changing the way we communicate and access information, which is why it is important for us to ensure digital inclusiveness for all Malaysians. So, it is indeed gratifying that Maxis is utilising the PI1Ms under its care to further benefit the community and giving it a greater purpose through digital education. And with the introduction of the eKelas portal, Maxis is enabling more students to truly embrace digital learning.”
“Our latest milestone in our eKelas programme is the eKelas portal. This portal offers content which empowers students to learn at their own speed and understanding. It encourages them to be independent. We will be rewarding students who have shown the most progress in their academic results through our new Students’ Grant programme,” said Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Maxis’ Chairman.
With the launch of the eKelas portal, Maxis plans to expand eKelas in phases to an additional 25 locations, delivering the programme through a total of 45 PI1Ms nationwide with at least 10,000 students accessing the portal by 2018.
