Bringing Digital Learning to the Community

Imagine enabling What’s Next in education to school students in rural and urban areas of Malaysia – where distance is not a barrier and students have access to experienced teachers and education content. Amazing isn’t it? And that’s what our new community programme, eKelas is all about.

Maxis eKelas is an after-school digital learning initiative that aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural and urban communities. Its focus is on three subjects - Science, Mathematics and English - from Year 6 up to Form 5. eKelas offers a combination of live tutorials, group learning and interactive digital content which is in line with the Malaysian School Syllabus. The programme is delivered at Pusat Internet, which are MCMC-run Internet Centres that serve as digital hubs for communities in underserved areas. Since its launch, eKelas currently has more than 4,000 students in terms of class population as well as those interacting within the eKelas portal.

Learning in a fun and vibrant way

With eKelas, we want to expose the students to new ways of learning. Besides connecting the students to experienced teachers via live tutorial sessions, the students learn through group projects, videos and competitions. But eKelas is not just about live tutorials, it is also about building the confidence for these students and that is why we have fun and engaging activities such as motivational talks and holiday camps.

We had the first holiday camp for eKelas students in March 2016. 60 excited students travelled to Kuala Lumpur for a two-day, educational and fun-filled camp. We brought them to Petrosains Discovery Centre; Twin Towers observation deck on Level 86; organized a video production workshop with popular tech blogger Amanz, and an up-close-and-personal session with our management team. The students were given hands-on learning experience on science and technology; made their own electrical lanterns from scratch, and each team collaborated to produce a short video which was then judged by Maxis employees.

The second eKelas Holiday Camp, which took place from 21-23 November 2018, saw 100 of the most dedicated eKelas students from 24 Pusat Internet (PIs) nationwide flying into the capital to participate in fun activities, interactive workshops, a visit to Petrosains in KLCC, as well as engagements with teachers and fellow eKelas students from all over the country. As part of Maxis’ partnership with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), this Holiday Camp was run at UKM’s campus for the first two days.
