Maxis implements first HSPA+ technology in Malaysia

Next-generation infrastructure capable of doubling wireless broadband download speeds

Kuala Lumpur, 23 December 2009: Maxis Berhad ('Maxis') today became the first communications company in Malaysia to deploy High-Speed Packet Access+ ('HSPA+') technology for its wireless broadband service in yet another initiative to fulfil the communications needs of Malaysians. The incorporation of this next-generation data transmission capability into Maxis' existing 3G network will enable subscribers surfing the Internet in selected areas in the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru to experience significant improvement in download speeds. The new technology is available now to select users on a trial basis, and following new announcements, will become widely available to Maxis customers during 2010.

Maxis' Executive Vice-President and Head of Network and Technology, Mark Dioguardi, said, "Maxis seeks to enrich the lives of its customers through bringing them the most advanced and innovative technologies. Maxis' implementation of HSPA+ in Malaysia is a positive commitment in this direction. For the past 12 to 18 months, we have substantially increased the coverage, download/upload speeds and reliability of our wireless broadband service. HSPA+ is yet another Malaysia first for Maxis to further improve Broadband Services".

"The capability of HSPA+ will meet Malaysians' ever-increasing demand for higher speeds in accessing the digital realm on the go, making browsing the Internet, video-streaming, uploading and downloading of high-resolution files enjoyable and seamless".

Built on a new radio modulation technique called 64QAM, HSPA+ represents the latest form of advancement in 3G/HSPA network capabilities, following High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (a kind of downlink speed enhancement) and High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (a type of uplink speed improvement). With HSPA+, Maxis' wireless broadband network can support Peak Rated Network Speeds of 21Mbps although users can expect speeds of up to 10-15Mbps in environments with good coverage. This equates to a doubling of current download speeds in certain areas of the network.

Maxis is well-poised to maintain its lead in mobile communications via its strategic expansion of HSPA+ coverage in Malaysia in phases from December 2009 till year 2011.

As Maxis moves forward into 2010, plans are to continue to invest in robust and value-rich enhancements of customer experience, through leading-edge technology.
