It can be difficult to understand what your data usage trend is and how it can run out quickly, especially if you have applications running on your PC without you realizing it. This guide will help you to understand and optimize your monthly usage better

What should you know about usage volume?
Your volume usage is how much data you download and upload on a monthly basis. Usually, volume usage is measured in Bytes.

Below is the estimated data size for files and applications based on your usage.

What causes heavy usage?
  • Streaming audio and video
    • Watching videos or listening to audio online can use up a lot of your monthly usage volume. Video requires much more data than audio, but some people listen to online radio stations all day long, and it can add up. Video hosting sites use multimedia heavily, which means they tend to use up a lot of your monthly volume.
  • Large file downloads from file hosting sites
    • Files on file hosting sites vary in size; some can be as large as 100MB or more. Reducing downloads or only downloading compressed files can save your usage volume.
  • File sharing
    • Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing applications can also take up a great deal of your usage volume. This is not restricted to downloads but also files that you upload.

 

Tips to reduce usage?
  • Disconnect from the Internet
    • This is the simplest and most effective way to save usage volume. If you are NOT using the Internet, just disconnect.
  • Exit applications fully
    • Many applications, especially P2P applications, do not terminate when you click the Close button. Instead, they are actually running in the background. One way to determine whether they are still open is to check the system tray in the bottom right of your computer’s desktop (where the clock is) to see if the application icon is still there. To properly exit the application, you typically have to click the right mouse button on the icon in the tray and choose ‘Exit’.
  • Compress large file
    • Emails with photos or other files attached are generally large in size. Before sending large email attachments, compress them to reduce their size. You can do this by checking if your operating system has file compression capability. If it doesn’t, obtain a file compression program like WinZip.
  • Significant web surfing
    • While web surfing does not usually create excessive usage, frequent web surfing can cause a significant amount of usage volume to mount up. One way to reduce your usage volume is to increase the size of your web browser cache. This allows your computer to access files from your hard drive instead of the Internet and thusly reduces data downloading. The most important thing is to keep track of your usage so that you can use the data allocated wisely.
