What is the present numbering structure?

Your present telephone number begins with a 2-digit area code (e.g. 03 for the Klang Valley) followed by a 7-digit telephone number (eg. 381 YYYY).
What will the new numbering structure be like?

The new numbering structure will begin with a 2-digit area code, followed by an 8-digit telephone number (e.g. 2381 YYYY)
Where will the one extra digit be inserted?

This additional digit will be inserted as part of the prefix on your current telephone number. At present, the prefix is the first 3 digits of the telephone number (e.g. XXX YYY).
With the new numbering structure, the prefix will consist of 4 digits (e.g. XXXX YYYY).
Will I be able to choose the 8-digit numbers during the upgrading?

No, because the prefix is determined according to your location and the last 4 digits will not change.
Will this new numbering structure be implemented throughout Malaysia?

Initially, it will only be implemented in the Klang Valley. Implementation in other states will be done in stages based on instructions from the authorities concerned.
Will this new numbering structure affect all fixed-line telephone customers?

Yes.
So, can a Maxis customer with 7-digit number call an 8-digit number provided by another telecommunications company and vice-versa?

Yes. The upgrading will not affect calls between different telecommunications operators.
When will this take place?

The numbering change from 7 digits to 8 digits will occur starting October 2002 until the end of the year. However, we have been introducing 2+8 digits in new Maxis Connections serviceable areas in Klang Valley since September 1999.

How will I be informed of the changes to my existing numbers?

- You have received a leaflet from us regarding the upgrade followed by a letter stating the actual date of change which was sent mid 2002.
- We are sending the next reminder notification in September, 2002 to the affected customers. This letter will include this Q&A.
- We will also, advise you in the bill message for 1-month prior and after the migration date. This message is sent to all Maxis Connections voice customers.
- Callers to your phone number will hear a voice message advising of the new prefix for 6 months up to 6 months after the respective date of change from 7 digits to 8 digits.
Can I receive IDD calls once the upgrade is implemented?

If the caller dials 7 digits from overseas, a recorded message will notify the caller of the new 8 digits number. The caller will then need to dial the 8 digits number for the call to be connected. Please note that the voice message will be on for 6 months from respective date of change from 7 digits to 8 digits.
