Since 2004, Maxis has been playing
a pivotal role in the government’s initiatives to
bridge the digital divide between
urban and rural communities. With
our VSAT technology and services,
we have been connecting rural communities nationwide with
telephony and Internet access
via the Universal Service Provision
(USP) Projects which are under the stewardship of the Ministry of
Energy, Water and Communications
(KTAK).
To date, VSAT technology
is still
among the most ideal method for
rural communities, especially those at remote areas, to be connected
into the
USP network and for them to enjoy
wider coverage, always-on services
and at minimal cost.
In 2004, Maxis SkyReach VSAT services were used in the USP Phase 2 project
to provide internet access to 176 rural libraries and 50 rural clinics nationwide.
In the USP Phase 5 project this year, Maxis SkyWay VSAT will be leveraged to connect
300 rural and district libraries nationwide.
With an end-to-end approach in mind, the USP Projects also includes the
provisioning of public payphones to complement existing telecommunications
networks and, ICT education and training to ensure continuity and progress
of ICT knowledge and skill-sets among users in the rural communities.
As a leading corporate citizen, Maxis treats these projects from the
Ministry as a challenging responsibility, in support of the government’s
initiatives for bridging the digital divide in the country.

country’s vision for a progressive Malaysian society based on ICT.
