Venezuelan oil and gas giant fueled by mobile office

Petrolera Ameriven taps into the convenience of a mobile office for its teams of engineers and developers in South America

17 September 2004 JOSE, ANZOATEGUI : Petrolera Ameriven SA (PA) has reached has a critical cross-road. Based in Venezuela and employing more than 1,000 employees, tri-partite joint venture of three major oil companies: Petroleos de Venezuela, ConocoPhillips and ChevronTexaco, needed to provide its highly mobile and international engineers and developers with access to its pool of centralised corporate resources as they travel in South America, from their homes or between any of the three member companies' offices, managing the production of crude oil in Venezuela's Orinoco Belt.

This access is crucial as the engineers and developers need to stay on top of every PA's oil-production facility. For example, its Hamaca Field at El Tigre , Venezuela , is capable of producing 30,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), with an 8.5 degree American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity crude oil. Disruption to these operations can be financially disastrous.

At the time PA was formed, a member of the venture had already subscribed and was using a remote access provider. Unfortunately the pricing was intended for U.S.-based Companies. As such, access charges were too high and proved to be very expensive as PA engineers or developers accessed centralised corporate resources as these access were made outside the U.S.

A new mobile office solution was sought to suit PA's operations in Venezuela. PA then decided the primary goal of the new mobile office solution was to dramatically reduce remote access costs.

...primary goal of the new mobile office solution was to dramatically reduce remote access costs.

After many mobile office and remote access trials with some of the world's largest telcos, PA decided to partner with California-based GoRemote Internet Communications Inc. and use its GoRemote Mobile Office solution. This mobile office solution passed PA's stringent tests and met both of PA's geographical and pricing requirements. Surprisingly, it was also the least expensive and provided the best coverage.

There were also four positive after effects when using the GoRemote Mobile Office solution:

1.
Rapid cost savings: The deployment period was only one month and it realized the primary goal of cost savings. In fact, PA recorded a 70 per cent reduction in remote access service costs.

2.
Quick return on investment (ROI): The ROI on PA's new mobile office solution paid for itself in just under three months. Many executives at PA were also worried that by investing in a mobile office solution that was the `least expensive', it would result in a tradeoff such as lower access service quality. However, the opposite happened as PA engineers and developers experienced a high service quality.

3.
Better management tools: PA's new mobile office solution also offered better management tools compared to other similar mobile office solutions. For example, management reports usually came in the form of a bill. However, the new mobile office solution had a universal remote control service which allowed PA Web-based access to detailed information on each remote user, including the date, time and length of every connection and mobile service used. It provided information about the engineer or developer's usage trends to enable better end-user service and ensure maximum cost savings.

4.
Rapid deployment: PA's IT department was too engaged and avoided a lengthy, complex, and time consuming service rollout with its new mobile office solution. In fact, the service rollout only took one month and required only minimal effort.

PA's decision to invest in a mobile office solution was justified as it experienced a reduction in its remote access costs by 70 per cent and realised a three-month ROI by deploying GoRemote Mobile Office. In addition, the new coverage met the needs of PA's remote workforce and improved both its user account management and customer service.
